SCIENCE + INDUSTRY MUSEUM: SPECIMEN JARS

This collection of 12 bespoke specimen jar props was designed and fabricated for the Horrible Science: Cosmic Chaos exhibition at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. Created as part of an immersive educational experience, the custom-made display props explored the unusual and often unpleasant physical effects of space travel on astronauts.

Each specimen jar contained a unique handcrafted prop representing the biological side effects of space exploration, including dehydrated astronaut poo, sweat, vomit, urine, farts and detached fingernails. Designed to capture visitors' attention while communicating scientific concepts in an accessible way, the props balanced educational value with the playful, gross-out humour that defines the Horrible Science brand.

The specimens were individually crafted before being permanently suspended within epoxy resin, creating the illusion of floating preserved samples. A range of specialist prop-making techniques, resin casting processes, and custom finishing methods were used to replicate realistic colours, textures, and organic details, resulting in highly convincing museum-quality display pieces.

Our prop-making services support museums, exhibitions, heritage attractions, experiential marketing campaigns, educational installations, themed environments, and public engagement projects. From realistic scientific models and museum artefacts to interactive display props and immersive exhibition features, we create bespoke pieces that bring stories, concepts, and experiences to life.
